Essay Critiques - The Concept of Place Tuesday, June 22, 2010
The Concept of PlaceThis is so hard to understand. @.@ ===================================================================================== A very long essay about the concept of places. The author wrote about his/her view and researches over all the aspects of concept of places. There are points that I agreed with very much. In the very beginning of the essay, the author already stated his/her place of opposing the mobile life. Researches showed that the lesser the interactions, meetings, between people, the higher opportunity of the people to get psychic / mental disorder. This is quite a true statement, like when we have no friends or anybody to talk to, we tend to think more and more and might develop some weird thoughts, the whole person became very much isolated and weirder. Lol. However how would a mobile life contribute to less interaction between people? There wrote that the environment advocated by the utopians, (Constant from Dutch with the New Babylon idea) would lead to self-centeredness. But with mobile life, people still could get interacted with each other; I guess it’s the state of mind that’s controlling this? Hmm. The mobile city sounded very interesting to me actually, adventurous and creative with new things all the time. In the other hand, after researching on the Siedlung Halen and it’s objective of standing there: “It has been a kind of continued struggle to make it clear that the purpose behind the construction of any single building, be it of the highest quality, is put in doubt when a community is no longer able to solve its building problems by offering its inhabitants acceptable surroundings in which to live.”, which was the creator’s words. Only I understand the emotional security within one person when standing in a place with imaginary structures instead of an unstable, always changing one. “When place is abolished, we simultaneously abolish architecture.” When architecture is abolished, so much energy will be abolished at the same time, which will create so much harm to the environment. If it is for me to choose to stand in either one side of wanting a mobile world without architecture or an imageable and architecturally articulate place, I would take on the place where can give secure feeling to the person who’s standing there. Is it possible to put both sides together? Mobile with architecture? @.@ =================================================================================== Existential Space This relates to psychological side more, where the author discussed the existential space and places in a way through psychology, for both adults and children. Swiss psychologist, Jean Piaget: It is not possible to arrive at any cognition without having an emotional relationship to the object, and without understanding it in a spatial and temporal context. And the child learns to recognize, that is, creates a world based on a system of similarities, and also certain things are associated with certain places. And with the egocentric minds of a child, a structure that the child recognizes, and being there would be very much centralized. It would be marked as a place for the kids, where it is actually the departure point to go to elsewhere. Here as the concept of place, the spots that we know, would be consider as a place for us. Like what’s that being mentioned in the essay, it would be a white spot in our map when we don’t know the certain places. Quite true, like we are staying in Malaysia, for sure in our own map in minds, the map of Malaysia would be there, and when one person don’t really know what’s and where’s Honolulu, it would be much as an abstract place in an unknown places on the earth. Could it be considered as a place when it’s appeared abstract in our mind? Hmm Then the two meanings of concept of place: place of action and point of departure. I agreed with this for the point where a human departs and reached is a place. The point where we had our activities surely would be marked as a place too. The journey from one place to another, could be as well be said as a place. Like running on a marathon, with a starting and ending point. With the aim of reaching the ending point, the place had become meaningful. The place had been said to have a horizon plane with surroundings, the person with activities would be in the middle of the interception of both mentioned above, while there will be the third dimension which is the vertical line. All these could calculate the human’s being inside a secure in mind zone like home or outside, elsewhere or even lost. By using this to determine the places of people, everything and the concept of space seems very structured. There the author said that the actions related deeply with the meanings and values of the structure. Particular actions are connected with particular places. There, to create a new space, we need to determine and consider the given site, environment and surroundings, and then implement existential patterns in it. Quite well said, although we have to consider the environment and site, we still have the freedom to design, to shape it according to our own needs. The existential space will have it’s own character with the combination of both the condition and beauty of site with our design that accommodate our own needs, when they work well together. I guess that’s what our design lecturer would like us to achieve in our design projects where we need to do site investigation and site planning. ===================================================================================== Architectural Space Yea, when the structure does not reach the satisfactory line of one person in the existential space, we need to modify the environment. And this happens always. Genius Loci is an important thing to be achieved in designing. To optimize the site use and site potential, of the nature, without doing harm to it. The built form is mostly determined by the character of the landscape. At different places, the structures and constructions will be different to suit and match the conditions there. The distinction between inside and outside is very much important in architecture. While for modern architecture, it’s defined as “new relationship between interior and exterior space”. This explains that in architectural space, there must be and enclosure, where separates the outdoor and indoor of a structure. A work of architecture characterized by it’s use and form in relation to it’s surroundings. There are a lot more of concepts that must be followed in order to create an architectural space. To create an architectural type of home, a domain has to be small, settlement must possess a livable scale, quoted by Rudolf Schwarz. Domain to be small, to feel safe inside the home, with livable scale, the correct anthropometrics. To let the domain feeling to have space of his own to live, to think, and do his private things without being exposed to the outside. Architecture occurs at the meeting of interior and exterior forces of use and space. And there, different architects tried different way in creating different feeling to their pieces of work of architecture, for example curve wall, and more creative and innovative design that had never been tried by others in the older architecture. As time goes by, with the rule that existential space have to be hierarchical as well, and with a lot more creative ideas, architecture have developed to more and more complex, at the same time, a lot of concepts coming out like form follow function, function follow form, or even both compromising each other. It was mentioned that however certain functions are characterized by a more or less regular repetition, and there, a lot of different spatial organizations in architectural spaces could be created by mix and match of those repetitions. So many we have studied in these two years including spatial organizations like side by side, intersection, space within space etc. =============================================================== Conclusion I agreed with some of the points in the essays but frankly speaking there are many that I couldn’t really understand after reading few times. @.@ The quality of the space really dependent on the psychological mindset of the users and also the surrounding environment of it,, whether it achieved genius loci etc. The author have already opposed on the mobility way of life which it's being proved that it will create psychic disturbance with less human contact. @.@ Besides, the quality of space is carried by how the space is being organized, planned, in any architectural language, where a lot of forms could be created with all types of possibilities when putting different repetition and organizations together. |
